Why the method matters
A shampoo cleans the top. Extraction cleans the depth.
A carpet shampoo works by agitating a foam into the top of the pile, then wiping or vacuuming off whatever lifts loose. It's fast, but it's a surface-level pass. The detergent itself doesn't get drawn back out, so a thin film of residue dries into the fibres near the top. That residue is sticky by nature, which means it attracts new dirt faster once it's dry, and it's part of why a stain can seem to fade after a shampoo, then resurface as the carpet dries and whatever's still lower in the pile wicks back up toward the surface.
Hot water extraction works the opposite way round. Hot water and cleaning solution are injected into the pile under pressure, then immediately drawn straight back out again with strong suction, in the same pass. The water and whatever it's picked up leaves the carpet with the machine, rather than being left to sit and dry in place. That's the actual difference: it reaches dirt that's worked its way past the tips of the fibres, not just what's sitting on top.
